Back to the Slipcover Shopping Guide
You don’t need to be a master seamstress to create your own slipcover. In fact, there are some options where sewing is not even a requirement! Either way, do-it-yourself slipcovers can give you the look you want at a much lower cost than ready-made or custom-made slipcovers, not to mention the satisfaction of creating your own décor!
Options for Sewing Slipcovers
If you do sew, then making slipcover can be a relatively easy task even for a sewing novice. There are several how-to books for creating custom slipcovers, along with many patterns that detail how to make any style of slipcover you can dream of. Just about every pattern maker has one or more slipcover patterns listed in the home decorating section of their pattern catalogs, and pattern makers Simplicity and Butterick both offer slipcover patterns for any level of sewing expertise.
No-Sew Slipcovers
If you do not sew, but do own an iron, then a company called Fitting Pretty may be the answer to your slipcover search. Fitting Pretty offers “no-sew” slipcover kits with everything you need to make loose-fit slipcovers from sheets or decorator fabric. The kits include heat-activated adhesive, skirt attachments, anchors and detailed instructions to help you iron your way to a new look. The Fitting Pretty slipcovers are styled like ready-made slipcovers, so if your furniture has loose- or scatter-back pillows, it may take a little extra work to achieve the look you desire, but it’s a great answer for a super-tight budget. |
